The unofficial biography of Microsoft, ASP.NET, Ajax, and jQuery

The Microsoft Ajax strategy has been a bit of a winding road.  Even if you’ve kept up with the evolution, as I have, you might be a little confused.  Today, Scott Guthrie published a blog post announcing that Microsoft’s first submissions to jQuery are official.  There was a corresponding blog post on the jQuery blog.  There’s also an overview video about the Microsoft submissions by Stephen Walther over on Ch.9.  What’s not covered in these posts is the historical evolution that brings us to what was announced today.  You may may be saying to yourself “So what?”  Well, the internet is full of blog posts on the topic.  Depending on the place in time when the blog post or article you come across via your favorite search engine (Bing of course) was published, you might be led astray.  Knowing what’s what and the history helps you from making the mistake of following stale information.  Dave Ward to the rescue!  He wrote up what I think if as the “unofficial biography” on the topic.  Definitely worth a read:

NOTICE TO ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES — We trust you understand Microsoft’s desire to ensure that we — and you — comply with applicable government gift and ethics rules set forth in Federal and State regulations, which restrict/prohibit public sector (government or education) employees from accepting gifts from entities doing or seeking official business with the public sector. A “gift” includes meals, giveaways, free software or other items of value given away at an event. If you wish to receive any of these items, you must pay market value for them or have written approval from your gifting/ethics officer or responsible attorney. Additional information and gift letter are available on registration site.

Windows Phone 7 and Government Apps

Joel Reyes, our team’s Windows Phone 7 Champ, just put up a blog post talking about Government Apps on Windows Phone 7.  Check it out.

http://bit.ly/d5liKP

Part of my team’s job this year is to get out and encourage developers to build citizen facing applications that get submitted to the Windows Phone Marketplace.  Two common questions are:

WHAT KIND OF PUBLIC SECTOR APPS CAN BE BUILT FOR V1?

For v1, applications must be citizen facing and publicly accessible via marketplace. Good examples of this are:

· HeyGov! – allows citizens to be active part of city quality by reporting issues directly.

· Congress – application with information about all congress representatives.

· Wheel – application provides citizens with public transportation data feed.

Other examples include things like military rank reference, per diem calculator, state news, etc.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN MY GOVERNMENT OR EDUCATION RELATED APP?

Yes.  Please let us know through the Public Sector Developer Weblog contact form.

San Francisco, Open 311, Silverlight and Windows Azure

“City of San Francisco, CA has launched their Open 311 solution called HeyGov! for San Francisco .  HeyGov! is a SaaS (Software as a Service) offering from Microsoft Partner, ISC, that provides a new and engaging way for citizens and governments communicate more effectively in the Web 2.0 era.

The service requests are captured from device-centric applications or entered by city’s 311 staff into their existing CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system, exposed via an API based on Open 311 standards and visualized via a rich user-interface built with Silverlight 4 and Bing Maps. Built and hosted on the Windows Azure platform, the HeyGov! solution also takes advantage of virtually unlimited storage and processing power of the cloud and provides the ability to quickly address service requests and implement updates even during peak times.”

Police Department Protects Citizens … with Windows 7

Pat Weikle, who is an Architect Evangelist on my team, just blogged about some great work he was a part of:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/publicsector/archive/2010/07/08/police-department-protects-citizens-of-vernon-hills-illinois-with-windows-7.aspx

Here’s a blurb from the official case study:

“The Vernon Hills Police Department wanted to support the work of its field officers by installing in-vehicle video recording systems in police cars. After evaluating available solutions, the department chose the Mobile Video Platform from Modularis, in conjunction with the Windows 7 operating system and the Windows Azure cloud computing platform. The solution has saved the city money and has become an invaluable job tool for field officers.”

Not called out specifically in the case study, but the application running in the police cars is a WPF app.
